Born from the love of food and community, we present a series of supper clubs inspired by the flavours of Gujarati cuisine we have grown up enjoying.

Khao Stores presents the Kadhi Tee.

Kadhi, found in every region of India, is a dish made of tempered yoghurt, cooked at very high heat. In Punjab, it is often cooked with onion fritters or pakora, In southern Indian states, it includes coconut in the temper. The way we've had it at home, it is cooked in lots of curry leaves and with ghee, and served with a peas and carrot rice. The Kadhi Tee is our homage to all Kadhi, and the strength and resilience of generational recipes getting passed from hand to hand.

The Artist: Presenting A Pocket Of Peanuts by Purvi Rathod.
Baroda, India

Purvi is a Creative Founder and Illustrator, based in Baroda, India, at A Pocket of Peanuts, where she collaborates with people to translate their stories and memories into hand-drawn illustrations. Through her work, she aims to celebrate the joys of daily life, urging us to slow down and take note of the fleeting yet precious moments that make up our days!

Purvi is a Creative Founder and Illustrator, based in Baroda, India, at A Pocket of Peanuts, where she collaborates with people to translate their stories and memories into hand-drawn illustrations. Through her work, she aims to celebrate the joys of daily life, urging us to slow down and take note of the fleeting yet precious moments that make up our days!

KHAO STORES: Gujarati Four Spice is out on @delli.market from Wednesday 19th March!

A specially blended seasoning, it can be used in traditional cooking or just add it to a dish and as how it goes?! It's base is the generations old flavours that remind me of the rural fields of coriander and cumin back in Fatana, Gujarat. The earthy composition packs balanced heat from the red chillies with richness from the cumin and slightly citrus tones of the coriander. The turmeric finishes off the golden hue to bring a touch of bitterness.

Khao Suppers presents the first in our collection of merchandise, bringing our love for classic Gujarati food through beautiful illustrations specially curated by us for you. For the first collection, we present "Dhokla are Gujarati?!", working with an incredible illustrator to bring our idea to life. The story behind this Tee originates from a conversation with a friend, who LOVES dhokla but had no idea they're Gujarati! So, to all our dhokla loving friends - Dhokla are Gujarati!

For our first design, we worked with London-based creative Yo-Janda! A creative who loves exploring his upbringing and identity through his art, with a background in graphic design and illustration, his playful style blends abstract lines and friendly characters to express his message. We have admired Yo-Janda's expressive creative style for some time and are so pleased to bring him on board to create the first illustration, helping us to bring our playful Dhokla friends to life!

Nothing beats a good tee. Slightly (or mostly) oversized, a few creases, sleeves rolled or not, maybe that hardar (turmeric) stain from dinner or dusting of flour from when you were making rotli? It's a staple and you've probably still got that one t-shirt you picked up years ago, something to put on and relax in, or maybe you look after it because you love the graphic?!

For our first drop from Khao Stores, we present a selection of everyday wear cotton t-shirts created with a special treat. Part 2 coming tomorrow....

As a child, the simple process of grocery shopping was so unique and magical to me. Whether it was Mina Stores in Forest Gate or a trip to Ealing Road and VB & Sons, I was always in awe of the smells, sights and sounds that just bombard my senses walking in to an Asian grocery store. Paying homage to those memories, I am delighted to present the launch of Khao Stores; personally curated and crafted products for you and your kitchen.

Everyday this week, we share details on our first drop, launching Friday 7th March.

PRESENTING: KHAO STORES

As a child, the simple process of grocery shopping was so unique and magical to me. Whether it was Mina Stores in Forest Gate or a trip to Ealing Road and VB & Sons, I was always in awe of the smells, sights and sounds that just bombard my senses walking in to an Asian grocery store. Paying homage to those memories, I am delighted to present the launch of Khao Stores; personally curated and crafted products for you and your kitchen.

Everyday this week, we share details on our first drop, launching Friday 7th March.

JAMVANU: it's coming together for a meal, it's making plans as you pass the salad, discussing that date you had over crispy chaat puris, it's a celebration of life, joy and all that happens at the dinner table. Join Khao Suppers as we present five courses intertwining traditional cooking methods with a fresh outlook - a celebration of Gujarati food, heritage and communal dining. Because mango season couldn't come soon enough, tapping into some mango favourites:
Last year, for our brunch club, Chai Nashto, we indulged in a dessert inspired by sweet khari—a delicate, flaky pastry. We transformed it into a stunning mille-feuille, layering crispy pastry with luscious mango mousse, a vibrant mango and passion fruit compote, and finishing it off with even more mango goodness—mousse, pulp, fresh mango pieces, and a touch of mint dust. A true mango delight! 🥭

Because mango season couldn't come soon enough, tapping into some mango favourites:
Last year, for our brunch club, Chai Nashto, we indulged in a dessert inspired by sweet khari—a delicate, flaky pastry. We transformed it into a stunning mille-feuille, layering crispy pastry with luscious mango mousse, a vibrant mango and passion fruit compote, and finishing it off with even more mango goodness—mousse, pulp, fresh mango pieces, and a touch of mint dust. A true mango delight! 🥭

This March, we're hosting our annual supper club paying homage to the mother, so whether it is your mum or a mother like figure, we invite you to bring them along for a special 5-course Gujarati inspired supper club. Expect classics and favourites together with new and imagined dishes from our kitchen or rasodu.

We're also very excited to be heading south of the river with a new venue partner, South London Louie, a cafe by day, linked to the South London Gallery. They will be serving our specially curated welcome drink along with a host of drinks on the night.

Khao Recipes: Purple Gajjar no Halwo | Purple carrot pudding

Whilst this recipe can be created with regular orange carrots, I used a small batch of organic purple carrots that I had in mine. If you double the amount of ingredients used, you should increase the cooking time.

Serves 1-2 (double the ingredients for more!)

Ingredients:
1 cup grated carrots - we used baby purple ones from surplus veg!
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp ghee or more if you like
1/3 cup milk - diary or vegan. Can also use cream
Finely chopped nuts of your choice

Method:
1. Wash, peel and grate the carrots.
2. In a non-stick, heavy base pan, add the ghee and keep the heat on medium.
3. Add the carrots and continue to stir every so often, making sure the carrots don’t overcook on the bottom of the pan.
4. After 10 minutes of cooking the carrots, add the sugar and stir well.
5. Allow all the sugar to dissolve, this depends on the type of sugar you’re using. You want to make sure all the moisture from your carrots evaporates.
6. Now add the milk, and let the mixture cook, constantly stirring so the milk doesn’t burn on the bottom.
7. Keep stirring, and checking the carrots are cooked through. This should take around 15 minutes, longer if you have more carrots!
8. Once the carrots are cooked through and the mixture sticks together, remove from the heat.
9. Finish with a garnish of finely chopped nuts of your choice and enjoy alone or with vanilla ice cream!

Here at Khao, we've been sharing Gujarati Shaak Rotli since 2018. Unadulterated, humble, modest, nowhere-to-hide, everyday, staple shaak rotli. Shaak, is the Gujarati word given to a vegetable or lentil main course dish cooked in tempered oil with, or without a curry style tomato sauce. It can be compared to a stir fry, oftentimes possible to create with any vegetable.

There's something absolutely comforting to me about rotli. Small, thin, and easy to just go through a few with your favourite accompaniment. Fresh off the heat, lots of butter or the next morning with chai and athanu 👌🏽

A week ago we hosted Chalo Jamva - the concept is simple, come and eat! It was such a wonderful evening kicking off February with wholesomeness. Thank you to all our guests who came along, it really was a pleasure to host you all. Always fun and feel like home when we host with @potterandreid and as always, I couldn't do it without my team by my side.

Khao Nights: Bringing punchy Gujarati street-food flavours to the table.

Sat perched on a plastic red stool at 9pm, auto-rickshaws beeping by, students chatting away and playing youtube videos for each other, families walking up for a post dinner-snack, the street food stall is one of the universal spaces that exists in every city, whether they’re selling pani puri, tacos or simply chai!

On Thursday 27th February, we share a three course meal inspired by Gujarati street food classics. What’s more, we’re back in Leyton with our friends HOST. There's always a little tingle when you host the first supper club after a month long break, especially when it's a new space, new kitchen and all that. But Hong & Jos of @homdalston were just as delightful as the beautiful space they have created. It felt like I was in my kitchen and dining room, hosting friends.

Daar Dinners is my ode to the unsung hero of Gujarati cuisine - tuvar daar, often called Lagan or wedding dal. It's simplicity lies in the cooking process and my gradual love for making this without the terror of burning or ruining it (🫠). We're back with Daar Dinners again soon, and more than not you'll definitely find us back at hōm too!

A product of old Bombay, pairing a deep fried potato fritters with a soft bread roll, this dish had found it's way in the hearts of people all over the world.
